A 71-year-old woman in Louisiana (USA) was arrested and charged with animal cruelty for keeping 14 dead cats in the freezer of her home.

Last Thursday (13), police went to the home of Sheri Hite in Morgan City after a concerned neighbor called and reported that packages were left untouched at the front door.

After knocking on the door and receiving no response, officers decided to go to the back of the house. There, police reported smelling a very strong odor and seeing a dead cat inside the house.

When the police managed to make contact with Sheri, who let them into her home, they said the smell worsened. Inside, they discovered several more dead cats.

A search warrant was obtained, and a search of the house found a total of 21 dead cats, 14 of which were in the freezer. Police also said one live cat was found and taken to an animal shelter.

According to authorities, Sheri told them she had taken in the cats to care for them, and the cats in the freezer were kept there temporarily before they could be disposed of.

Sheri was arrested and is being held in custody by the Morgan City Police Department. She faces 23 counts of aggravated animal cruelty, with bail set at $25,000.

In Louisiana, bail for animal cruelty is determined by the guardian of the animal after it has been taken from the accused, covering all costs for 30 days of shelter and treatment of the animal following an examination by a licensed veterinarian.
